The Linux Boot Process

The Linux boot process is something that usually "just works".... until it doesn't. It's at those times when something doesn't work that some might realize "Hey! I know almost nothing about how this thing actually gets itself up and running!"

This talk will cover the boot process from the Power On Self Test, to the Grub boot loader, all the way through to the loading of the kernel, the init process, and the starting of the proper services. Opportunities for customization, and common sources of trouble will be covered, and everyone is invited to share their experience along the way, or just relax and take it all in.

The Linux Users Group in Princeton is a computer club serving the Central New Jersey area. We are a collection of people dedicated to GNU/Linux™ (a powerful, free, Unix-like operating system), Free Software, Open Source, and other related topics.

Our goals are education, advocacy, support and socializing.
