Joe and Christina's favourite GIMP wart is the inability to create
multiple layer groups. For example, they want to retain links between
layers 1,2,3 and 4,5,6 across saves.

As John notes, GIMP doesn't support this. However, for the last few
years, several developers have been working on a new backend for GIMP,
the Generic Graphical Library (GEGL)[1], that will support this.

I'll discuss the problem in more detail and preview GEGL at the next
Cherry Hill LUG[1] meeting (which hasn't been scheduled yet) as part of
my general talk about GIMP.

Once Gimp switches to GEGL, a lot of other nifty features will also
become much easier to impliment.

Thanks,
